Archive

I have been browsing my old bookmarks, finding dead links and trying to retrieve them using Internet Archive and other services.

It is really sad to see how information and creations are constantly lost forever due to various reasons. Other than nostalgia's sake, those archives give context, not only to right our perception of technology advances (or regressions), but also to observe the shift of cultures and languages.

Since a few decades ago, several generations are shaped significantly by the World Wide Web (though I would say that the influence of webpages on the general public is becoming weaker, compared to proprietary social networks). These webpages and online contents are part of our history, be it images, video clips, MIDI music, Flash games etc. We cannot afford these vanishing or (bit)rotting away in abandoned servers.

There is a need for preserving all the data published online, and supporting it is what I would like to do, by making archival and retrieval of archived contents easier. With sufficiently ergonomic tools that non-technical people can use, I believe that most users would rather have the information archived on their ever-cheaper storage space, than having them discarded.

The discoverability problem is perhaps harder. Currently we have some services providing snapshots of websites, but centralized data store poses problems. Most recently the global political climate is starting to cause disturbance to the tech sector, and as we have learned on the Internet through the years, there is no such thing as good will, and we must assume every entity evil.

Decentralized persistent storages such as IPFS are still in its infancy, in terms of both mind share and technology. But in the future I would like to be able to not only see the future as we build it, but also look back and recall what we have done.
